# Asking Questions

> How to ask effective questions using mentions, skills, date ranges, and filters.

Ask Anything supports several input tools that help you ask precise, well-scoped questions. This page covers each one and when to use it.

## Plain Language Questions

Type your question in plain English. The agent translates business language into SQL, so ask the way you'd ask a colleague on the data team.

**Examples:**

* "What was our conversion rate last week?"
* "Show me the top 10 events by volume this month"
* "Compare daily active users between iOS and Android"

## Mentions (`@`)

Type `@` to reference a specific component from your Semantic Catalog. A dropdown appears with your available metrics, features, segments, and entities.

Mentions ensure the agent uses the exact business definition you intend — rather than searching and potentially picking the wrong one.

**Example:** *"What is @Monthly Revenue broken down by country?"*

<Tip>
  Mentions are the most reliable way to point the agent to the right component. Use them whenever you're referencing a specific metric, segment, or entity.
</Tip>

## Skills (`/`)

Type `/` to invoke a skill — a reusable analysis methodology that guides the agent through a multi-step workflow. The agent follows the skill's instructions step by step, asking clarifying questions and validating results along the way.

**Example:** *"/funnel\_analysis"* — The agent asks which events to include, runs the analysis, and validates the output.

## Date Range

Use the date picker dropdown to scope your question to a specific time period. Presets include:

* Today, Yesterday
* This Week, Last Week
* Last 7, 14, 28, 60, 90, 180 days
* This Calendar Month, Last Calendar Month
* Custom date range

If no date range is selected, the agent uses its judgment based on the question.

## Filters

Pre-configured product filters appear above the input field. These constrain the data the agent queries — for example, filtering by platform, region, or product.

<Note>
  Product filters are configured by the ClarityQ team during onboarding. Contact [support@clarityq.ai](mailto:support@clarityq.ai) to add or modify filters.
</Note>

## Follow-Up Questions

Ask Anything is conversational. Within the same session, you can ask follow-ups that build on previous answers:

* "Break that down by platform"
* "What about last month?"
* "Exclude test users"
* "Show me that as a line chart"

The agent retains the full context of your conversation.

## Editing Messages

If you want to refine a question without starting over, hover over your message and click the **Edit** icon. Edit is best for small corrections — clarifying wording, adjusting a mention, or fixing a filter. The agent re-runs the analysis with your updated question, and you can navigate between message versions using the arrow buttons.
